Die naive Vorstellung, dass sich Nintendo und Sony in der neuen Handheld-Generation gegenseitig in Ruhe ließen, entspricht abermals nicht der Realität. Dort draußen zwischen PR-Kämpfen und Verkaufszahlen attackierte jetzt Jack Tretton, Sony Computer Entertainment und CEO in Amerika, Nintendo verbal. Erst urteilte er über Nintendos Wii und ihre Bewegungssteuerung als „süß“, anschließend bekamen auch die DS-Geräte ihr Fett weg. So seien Nintendos Handhelds tolle Geräte für’s Babysitten und geeignet für jüngere Kids – aber niemand älter als 20 Jahre, der etwas auf sich hält, würde in der Öffentlichkeit einen DS bzw. 3DS herausholen.
Wortwörtlich sagte er gegenüber Fortune :
„[Microsoft and Nintendo] are starting to run out of steam now in terms of continuing to be relevant in 2011 and beyond. I mean, you’ve gotta be kidding me. Why would I buy a gaming system without a hard drive in it? How does this thing scale? Motion gaming is cute, but if I can only wave my arms six inches, how does this really feel like I’m doing true accurate motion gaming?
Our view of the ‘Game Boy experience’ is that it’s a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, [but] no self-respecting 20-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those. He’s too old for that.“
Klare Ansage, was Sony aktuell von Nintendo hält. So versucht man zumindest, die andere Firma an der Öffentlichkeit herunterzureden. Ansonsten betont Tretton im Artikel, wie toll 3D für die Videospiel-Zukunft sei, rückt aber hier statt dem 3DS eigene Produktpläne in den Vordergrund.
